Fame Meets Glee in Pitch Perfect

Fans of Fox’s popular musical drama Glee will not be disappointed when they sit down in front of the big screen to watch Pitch Perfect. This film also has a little Fame-like flavor with all the “making it big” fears replaced by plenty of humor; provided mostly by Rebel Wilson’s character, “Fat Amy”.

Filmed in Louisiana with many scenes on Louisiana State University’s campus, the movie follows Beca (Anna Kendrick), an aspiring DJ whose only goal in college is to stick it out for a year so her father will pay her way to move to L.A. and pursue her music. It doesn’t take long for her talent to be discovered—in a way Beca never expected. The Barden Bellas, the university’s all-girls a Cappella group, recruit this talented, but reserved girl to rebuild the group and beat their male rivals. Beca, along with Chloe (Brittany Snow) seek to infuse some much needed new energy and updated choreography into The Bellas, but are met with strong resistance from the group’s leader Aubrey (Anna Camp). However, after making it to finals only because of a rule violation from another group, this second chance leads to more open minds and the refreshing new repertoire wins them their title, redeeming them from last year’s meltdown.

In addition to unique covers of modern hits such as David Guetta’s Titanium, Dr. Dre’s No Diggity, and Jessie J’s Price Tag combined with the 80s classic Don’t You Forget About Me (Simple Minds), the story brings various personalities together into one group: the perfectionist, the talented rebel, the quiet one, and the comedian, among others. This group of ladies surprisingly exhibits more acceptance and teamwork than drama, a nice change from typical characters in this genre. The rugged scenery their late-night rehearsals, parties, and the “riff off” scene required were made possible by filming on location in a dilapidate building in Baton Rouge with a portable sound studio. Location finders chose an abandoned twelve story Louisiana State building. The condition of this building required acoustical barriers to be built just about everywhere, but the resulting audio tracks were well worth the effort.

Director Jason Moore and record producer Harvey Mason Jr. made sure Pitch Perfect lived up to its name while leaving room for several controversial comedic jabs about drugs, Jews, and sexuality. The supporting roles completed a well-rounded cast and included up and coming actors Alexis Knapp(Stacie), Hana Mae Lee (Lily), and Skyler Astin (Jessie). Several others were seen in brief sequences, including Christopher Mintz-Plassee who starred in Superbad. Overall, the opportunity to create vocal arrangements of popular new music, bring some humor to the world of a Cappella singing, and send a message of triumph through the fine arts was taken full advantage of--with opening weekend box office sales grossing over $5 million, it’s safe to say many agree.
