New York has always been a leader in the filmmaking industry, and its days of shooting have increased two-fold in the past 15 years.
In 1993 there were 15,000 days of shooting in the state, and in 2006 there were over 34,000 days of shooting.
New York legislators recently signed a large incentive bill, giving a 30% refundable tax credit for productions that include 75% of filming within the state.
Investment in film production facilities is good for a tax credit up to 5%. New York City alone has over 900,000 square feet in sounds stages that are ready and willing to have shooting.
While New York does have an urban mystique to it, a large part of the state is peppered with forests and lakes. Both “upstate” and “downstate” New York are great contrasting areas for filming locations.
